In 1997, Martina became the youngest player ever to achieve the #1 ranking in the world—she was sixteen years and three months at the time. Everyone loved her, but then she started talking and never shut up.
Her image took a few hits when she made fun of gay players (they’re half men), called being black an advantage, and said that Steffi Graf was old and past her prime—a year before dropping the French Open final to her.
So she took a couple years off before making a comeback in 2005, and just when things were going half-decent, she tested positive for cocaine at Wimbledon and received a 2 year ban from the game.
